Well... looks like only one vault collapsed.

Not great, but considering how intense that fire was, not bad at all.

Kinja'd!!!

Still going to be a slow and expensive analysis and rebuilding process.

Yep, just posted a similar pic to the previous thread. Who knows how sound the other vaults are, and how much water damage there is, but it looks like the interior was largely saved. I think there may be more than one vault down, but it looks like maybe only the spire was able to punch its way through (I think it fell to the west, so it may have taken down the obvious hole) .

They are reporting that the north rose window survived (it had previously been reported that all three had been destroyed), so that’s good news, though I fear for the condition of the windows all around, those are a lot more fragile than stone.

It's horrible on one hand, but it survived and someday it will simply be a part of its history.

That’s actually a really cool photo with the cross lit up like that.

It’s sad to see now but they will rebuild it, and I have seen articles stating that they managed to save all the artifacts and art contained within. Today will just become another chapter in the story for Notre Dame.

i shoulda scrolled a bit , just  posted almost the same photo.  I really was expecting much worse.  It would be great to see them restore it but it would also be cool to see them restore what is left and replace what was destroyed with a modern design.

France, in particular, has a solid history of rebuilding historical properties after tragic events befall them. This will be no different. As bad as it is, I really thought it was going to be much worse.

I took a bunch of architectural history classes (I got an architectural degree before I decided to become a teacher), and I remember several buildings where they had been changed or remodeled over the centuries for various reasons, including fire and structural collapse.

It’s also difficult to understand in our modern world, where buildings take a period of years or even sometimes months to build, that these cathedrals took generations, or even centuries to build.  If they manage to repair this in 50 years, that is quite frankly break-neck speed compared to the time it took to build initially.

Imagine the people who laid the first bricks of Notre Dame knowing that their grandchildren wouldn’t live to see it completed. Incredible.

You know, I never thought about it that way. That is kind of mind blowing.
